This series consists mainly of the records that were necessary in the administration and organization of the Branch of the Bank of the State of Alabama at Mobile. The various correspondence records consist of letters to and from the Directors and President of the Branch Bank, letters to the Alabama Treasury Department, letters from the Navy Agents' Office in Pensacola, Fla., correspondence from clerks stating the dollar amount they are going to personally carry to the Mobile Branch Bank, letters of recognition by officials of the Bank, notices of law suits brought against the Mobile Branch Bank by the Planters and Merchants Bank, correspondence from the New York Merchant's Bank, correspondence to Governor Benjamin Fitzpatrick of Alabama, correspondence from the Orphan's Court in Montgomery County, and other business records. Also included among the correspondence files are Branch Bank papers from Mobile and Montgomery, consisting of letters to the Bank Commissioner A. Halcomb. The various financial records consist of payments of notes, statements of complaints pertaining to people requesting loans from the Mobile Branch Bank and receiving replies from the stockholders, deeds, mortgages, land patent certificates from the General Land Office of the United States and signed by President Martin Van Buren, and various other general financial statements and reports dealing with the financial position of the Mobile Branch Bank. The Bank records depict a part of the organization and function of the Alabama government in the middle part of the 19th century. They also show the control the State Bank and its branches had over other officials such as sheriffs, who were required to collect debts in the name of the Bank and its branches.
